Kyra in Faith; Chapter 1; Impressions

“Father!  Don’t make me do this!”

“Come Kyra, this doesn’t have to be difficult”

“Yes it is! You know I hate Derek!  And he’ll probably make me dance with him!”

Prince Derek was the soon-to-be ruler of the kingdom next to ours.  He was also a stuck-up ego-headed jerk.  The only thing he needed was a wife to be king…. me.  Only I have said no every time he had asked me.

“Kyra! The seamstress had already made this beautiful dress for you!” My Father argued.

“No! I refuse to!”

“Kyra Lee Jane Lovett!  You will!  You will make a good impression to King Edwin and I will not have my daughter act rudely to him or his son!”

“Fine!”  I screamed my face red.

I grabbed the frilly dress and stomped of into my bedroom when my mistress would help me.

The dress reached the floor and was extremely thin.  It had eyelet lace and was colored a strange olive tone.  I was going to need a corset by the looks of it.

My mistress, Hattie, as cheery as ever, slipped the dress over my head and tightened the corset to a point where I couldn’t breath.  The green color of the dress brought out my deep green eyes and illuminated my reddish brown hair.  I looked more vividly then ever.  I stood back from the six foot mirror to gaze at myself.  I had never looked this pretty in a dress before.  Father must have gotten this dress for a reason tonight.  The thought scared me.

I sat down, waiting for Hattie to do my hair.  She combed out the snarls leaving my hair soft and smooth.  As a last step she put in a gold and emerald tiara to match the dress.

I put on a pair of long emerald earrings and slipped on my gold shoes.

“You look lovely your majesty” Hattie spoke.

“Thank you Hattie”

“We better get you down to the ball. Everyone is waiting”

“I know” I sighed, sadness in my voice.  I hated dancing in an over-done dress.

I sat up slowly.  It was impossible to get up fast with this corset.  I made my way through the corridor and across the palace to the doubled stairway that led to the ballroom.  My father was there; ready to make his announcement to everybody in the kingdom I was ready to enter the room.  To me, it sounded silly.  All this just to have me enter the room.  I rolled my eyes at the inside thought.

My Father nodded, notifying me to get ready.  He walked to the center of the stairs.

“Ladies and gentlemen” He spoke the voice of a leader, “Lend me your ears for I would like to introduce my daughter, Princess Kyra Lee Jane Lovett”

At that moment, a chorus of violins and harps played.  I was supposed to walk out in front of everyone.  It took me a moment but I finally got my feet to respond to my brain.  I took small steps down the stairs.  All the eyes were staring at me.  I scanned the room to see that friends and enemies were there.  The first person I saw was Derek.  He was in the front of the crowd, smiling an evil grin.  I looked away from him to see someone else.  And surely, he was there.  I saw my best friend Charlie standing in the back of the crowd.  I wanted to wave at him but my father would not approve, so instead I just smiled in his direction.

I was past the stairs now and onto the middle of the ballroom.  Someone was supposed to ask me to dance with them now.  I looked around to see if anyone was coming to my side.  Charlie took my hand from behind me.  I turned around.

“Would you like to dance?”

“Yes Charlie” I said.

We danced to the most isolated are in the ballroom, the farthest place away from Derek as possible.

“I owe you one Charlie”

He chuckled.

“No problem Kyra. I wouldn’t want you to dance with anyone you don’t like” He replied in a soft voice

Charlie was practically my soul mate…only we were known as “best Friends” to other people.  Someday, I wanted to marry him.  The only problem was that he was not from a rich family.  My father would never approve of me choosing him.  His family owned the town’s blacksmith shop that I want to often when I had nothing to order from them.  We didn’t dance long.  Derek came a few minutes later.

“May I cut in” he asked.

Charlie stepped back one step, showing he could.

Derek grabbed my hand and led me to the middle of the dance floor.  It was a slow dance sadly.  We got in a dancing position.  He pulled me tight to his chest, much closer then the respectable distance.  I tried to struggle out of his iron grip but he was to strong.  He leaned his head close to my face to whisper.  I leaned away.

“You don’t seem to like being pulled away form peasant boy” he grinned

“Gee I wonder why!  And he is not a Peasant!”

He only pulled me closer.

“I don’t understand.  I am a much better dancer then he is.  Don’t you think so?”

He smiled.  He looked malevolent with how his eyes looked so dark.

“Yes, but I don’t care about the dancing!  He is not an ego-maniac like you are!!!”

“So you do think I am better at dancing?”

“No that’s not what I meant!”

“But you did say ‘Yes’”

“You such a Jerk Derek!!! You think you’re so handsome and charming on all girls but you’re not!  I don’t love you!”

He laughed.

“You’re so blind Kyra.  You don’t even know what we could accomplish with me as you king”

“I don’t care!”

The music stopped.

“Let go!” I snapped

His grip loosened and I turned my head to walk back to Charlie.  I could feel his furious glare behind me.

Charlie was leaning by a wall with perfect posture.  His hair was dark brown that showed of his electric green eyes, a similar shade to mine.  He was handsome, not extremely but decently.

“You looked happy” he said, sarcastically.

It cheered me up……a little.

“He is just so confidant that I’ll marry him someday!”

“Well I know you will never do that”

I leaned into his chest, resting my head on his shoulder.

“You’re such a good friend Charlie.  The absolute best”

“You are to Kyra”

We danced the whole night away, only stopping to take a break to chat between each song.

Eventually it got really late and people started to leave.

“I have to go Kyra”

“Can’t you stay a little longer?”

“I should go.  My dad is also leaving”

“Ok…So I will see you soon right?”

“Sure, come by my shop any time you want ok?”

“I will”

He smiled and walked away.  People were exiting the doors.  Only King Edwin and Price Derek were left.  My father was talking to them in whispers.  I had a hunch that they didn’t want me to hear.  In the middle of their conversation Edwin looked at me, which confirmed that they were talking about me.  They finished their chat and walked toward the door.  Before the door closed, I saw Derek wink.  I rolled my eyes hopping he would see my expression.  As soon the ballroom was empty but of me and my Father, I ran up to my room to go to bed.  The wrest of the night would have been peaceful except my father fallowed me.  He sat on my bed and I sat next to him.

“How was your night Kyra?”

“Okay Father”

“What did you think of Prince Derek?”

“Why does it matter?”

“Just answer the question my daughter”

“To be honest I thought he was an immature self absorbed pig Father.  I told you I hate him!”

“I see”

“Permission to ask father…but, what were you talking to King Edwin for?”

“To be honest Kyra, we were discussing matrimony for you and Derek”

“You what!?!?”

“He is would make a great king Kyra!”

“I don’t care!  I don’t love him!  I’m only sixteen!”

“I know….but it’s for the good of the kingdom!  I will not make you marry him but I want you to think about it.”

“Fine Father”

“Yes now get some rest.  You need sleep”

He blew out the candle next to me and left the room.  I was practically in shock.  I couldn’t be married to Derek!  I was so young.  Most of the women got married when they were eighteen.  The thoughts made me tired and a quickly fell asleep.  That night I had a nightmare.
